Building Making

HARSH SHAH | Semester 6 | 2022-2023

The building making course carries out detailed devolopment and refinement of building design through the technical resolution of structural system, material performance and experience, member assembly, threshold enclosure details and construction process. The course in aims in understanding and conceptualizing crafting builtforms where the logistics of spatiality are based on systems and details along with orienting them to the practices around construction documentation and management.

The course opened a nuanced layer of the relationship between structure, material and space where I understood the way in which the structure governs the way of design. the way in which a material brings about a certain expeirence. The course taught to look through the lens of human comfort and the expirience through that comfort.

The course also threw light on the whole building making process from scratch and touched upon all aspects of it; i.e. understanding the process from site till the completion of it.

We understood site management which opened up about the transportation and storage of material on site while taking care of the labour and their needs.

The importance of spefications and bill of quantities was understood which in turn made me realise the importance of finances in a aproject.

Overall I learnt all the parts of the process of building making hold a very important stake in the broad process and have to be focused on.

SITE, SITE FORCES & CONTEXT

The transit camp of Trombay known as Cheeta Camp has diversity in the way the community lives. One such space has an intresting set up. The public toilet block , pathology lab and a small balwadi. All the three spaces are spaces of care and wellbeing, but the spatiality is more intresting. This lead to many observations.

PROGRAMME & SCOPE & DESIGN INTENT

These observations directed and helped in identifying something very critical. I understood how the unused spaaces have become scoops in the built mass and small incrustations have appeared in the vast open spaces.

Incrustations were used by people for seating which were the meter box, drain and the toilet plinth. Spaces having vegetation also became these scoops in the open fabric devoid of it.

These led to the design stratergy of scoops.

The design diagram begin with the idea of scoop.

The 1st set of iterations boradly focused on creating a courtyard and inward looking space which would afford more interaction between the people.

These inward looking spaces created some kind of boundry and disconnected itself without the community inspite being spaces of care.

To address this a new stratergy I tried focusing on the circulation and access of the spaces on the site.

These spaces hold a dyanamic way in the scoop ges created. The central alley slowly merges itself into the scoops for creating a new way of navigating the space.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

The concept focused on devoloping scoops in space which get opened up to the community which they can inhabit. Certain scoops have a garden which can be taken cared by the women of the community. Certain scoops afford interaction of the people during all the times of the day.

DESIGN DEVOLOPMENT & DETAILING

In plan understanding how each scoop would behave with the context and what expirience would one have in terms of floor finish.

Looking the scoop created by the staircase and the duct of toilet, where a potted plan garden can take place and be taken care by the people of the community.

Understanding the window conditions of Balwadi and Caretaker's house with the detail of how planter bed would sit on the chajja.

Working the scoop of goat shelter structurally and crafting a expeirence for the community.

Crafting the facade of the pathlab with cantilever pergola opened up for the community.

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT & PLANNING

The Site Management Plan opens up the location for site office and labour spaces, it also shows the various access routes for vehicles and pedestrains.

The Bar Chart lists out the process of the construction and estimates the time of the project to 41 weeks.

The Critical Path Diagram bring about the important activities and a set path in which they will happen, optimizing the time of the project to 43weeks.
