SLEEPOVER GARDEN

Updated: Sep 22, 2023

The pandemic has bought about numerous changes in the way mankind sustains itself. It has jeopardized a lot of people and profited a very few of them. During such a time many temporary changes could be observed in the neighbourhood. The first changed practise that I observed was spilling over of homes, a lot of peole staretd to accumilated the informal spaces around the streets to pass the night. The reason behind was lack of space within their homes which dwelled in the nearby informal settlements. Due to the pandemic a lot of people inhabited the small space duting the same hour of the day which was ususally the night. The second practice that I observed was of changing routines of the residential people Lot of people started to use the night as their walking and relaxing time. While some enjoyed the illuminated spaces some also feasted in the darkness of the night. These observed practices led to the programs of changing the routine of space, sleeping space at night for the sleepover and a liesure space during the day. The site i chose for is a BMC garden between two residential buidlings. The site had a lot of vegitation which was overgrown and that led to the space being unused. This provided as a fantastic site for intervention as I myself could inhabit the space during the process of design. The design idea begin with the thought of bed as I had to provide for a sleepover. But bed was not a part to subject which opened the door for me to use sleeping bed, flower bed and roof bed. To make the flower bed and sleeping be as a intregrated idea I advanced to use different plith levels. Thinking of plinth made me work on two more plith levels the walking and seating levels. The roof I planned was trellis it does not restrict itself to a mere roof but the form and scale of it also allows for it to become a playform for kids and a street workout element. Togeather the design has two elemets, the plinth and the trellis roof, forming a syntax that changes the expeirence of garden. During the day the space can be broadly used as a graden by people of all age groups. During the night time the garden changes into a sleepover space where the front part of the garden can be used as a sleepover space but last zone of the garden which has a dense patch of vegitation infront of it making it a invisible space during the night. The idea of this space came back from the practice of people enjoying darkness. So this space is to provide for that. For the sleepover people have to bring their own mosquito nets and tie it to the easily accesible trllis roof and its columns. So in all this project aims the simaltaneous use of night for sleeping and enjoying the night and even stay awake in the darkness and enjoy the night, while during the day it becomes a leisure space for eveyone.
